GameCare – information, advice, support and counselling for the iGaming industry

GamCare is the leading provider of information, advice, support and free counselling for the prevention and treatment of problem gambling.
GamCare takes a non-judgemental approach to gambling. We do not wish to restrict the choices or opportunities for anyone to operate or engage in gambling opportunities that are available legally and operated responsibly.

We develop strategies that will:

•Improve the understanding of the social impact of gambling
•Promote a responsible approach to gambling
•Address the needs of those adversely affected by a gambling dependency
GamCare operates the national telephone and online helplines for anyone affected by a gambling problem and provides both face to face and online counselling, free to clients. Our provision of face to face counselling reaches many parts of the UK and we are constantly developing the service to ensure that it is available locally. We encourage use of all our support services by any family members affected, to help address the impact on their lives.

Additionally, GamCare works to support the development and implementation of responsible policies and practice by the gambling industry and recognises best practice through a Certification scheme. If you are a member of the gambling industry and keen to learn more please visit www.gamcaretradeservices.com. The Nature of the Problem

The British Gambling Prevalence Survey is a large-scale nationally representative survey of participation in gambling and the prevalence of problem gambling in Great Britain. The latest report was published in 2007. For a summary of the findings click here

Funding, Research, Education and Treatment

In October 2007 Gambling Minister Gerry Sutcliffe asked the Gambling Commission to review the funding of, and priorities for, gambling research, education and treatment. The review reported in October 2008 and recommended the establishment of a new structure for determining strategy and raising and distributing funding. Gambling and Debt

The first known UK research to focus exclusively on the relationship between problem gambling and problem debt, published in October 2009, was jointly commissioned by GamCare and the Money Advice Trust. Researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University, supported by the Salvation Army, sought the views and experiences of problem gamblers and their families, representatives of the credit and gambling industries, and professionals from the money advice and problem gambling fields. For a summary and the report click here

 Young People and Problem Gambling

Problem gambling doesn’t just affect adults. There are an estimated 127,500 people aged under 24 with a gambling problem in the UK. The rate of problem gambling is over three times as high in young people as it is in adults. However it has consistently been shown that young people do not seek help for gambling problems. GamCare’s Response to the Responsible Gambling Strategy Board: initial strategy and priorities for research, education and treatment
GamCare fullly supports the Responsible Gambling Strategy Board’s (RGSB) emphasis on basing strategy and decisions on evidence and evaluation. However, we believe that some of the RGSB’s recommendations are premature, and are not clearly based on evidence or evaluation. To read our full response click here.
